A keynote for entrepreneurs, from a founder who is still building

"If you want to see pure, unfiltered grit in action, watch someone build a business from nothing," Paris Norriss wrote after speaking to the OPUS entrepreneurs community. "It's not pretty, but it's powerful." Paris is a keynote speaker on grit and mindset and the founder and CEO of Blazing Sand Studios, the production company he started in 2019. His keynote for entrepreneurs combines extreme adventure with the reality of building companies, and it is delivered by someone who is still in the arena.

The idea is not the hard part

Paris challenges a popular myth: that one great idea is the key to success. In his experience, an idea is a starting point at best. Then come the struggles: getting people to take you seriously, bad hires and the firings that follow, cash-flow problems and outside forces that knock your legs out from under you. The founders who survive do not have better ideas. They have relentless grit. The Grit Code shows founders how to build it deliberately.

From a 3D model to a real city

When Paris arrived in Dubai about 17 years ago, he came with a business plan and an investor. There was no start-up ecosystem, no playbook and no local success stories to point at. Speaking to 150 founders at a Creative Zone event in May 2026, he described standing in front of a 3D model of a city that did not exist yet, and then standing inside it. He recalled meeting the future co-founder of Careem at a founders' event at the Capital Club in 2012, when it was still a limousine company. "Those early founders didn't have role models. So they became them." His challenge to the room: who will be the success stories people talk about 15 years from now?

What founders take away

  • Purpose as a filter. Paris says he has had a billion-dollar idea three times and ignored the first two because they did not fit his purpose. The third, at the meeting point of entertainment production and AI, won a Shark Tank-style pitch competition at Upside in Dubai in May 2026.
  • Planning meticulously, then adapting. The Pacific row started with 55 days of food and a fixed routine. The ocean rewrote it within days. Start-ups live the same way.
  • A small team under pressure. Four people in one small boat for 39 days is the closest thing to an early-stage start-up Paris knows. Roles, trust and honest conversations decide whether the team holds together.
  • Recovery and endurance. Seven marathons on seven continents in 5 days, 21 hours and 51 minutes is a lesson in pacing when the finish line is a long way off.
