A leadership keynote on grit, from someone who has led under pressure
Leadership is easy to talk about when the plan is working. It is tested when the plan breaks. Paris Norriss is a keynote speaker on grit and mindset and CEO of Blazing Sand Studios, and his leadership keynote comes from moments when the plan broke completely: 40-foot waves in the middle of the Pacific, a flooded cabin, a cargo ship turning towards a rowing boat, and seven marathons on seven continents in 5 days, 21 hours and 51 minutes. He turns those moments into a practical method that leadership teams can use the week after your event.
Why grit is a leadership skill
Most leadership programmes focus on strategy, communication and decision-making. All three matter. But leaders are rarely judged on the quality of the plan. They are judged on what happens when the plan meets reality: when a deal falls through, a market shifts or a team is stretched past what anyone expected. That is where grit comes in. Grit is the ability to keep going, and keep others going, when motivation runs out. The Grit Code breaks it into skills that can be taught, practised and measured, rather than leaving it as a personality trait some people are lucky enough to have.
What leaders take away
- Plan meticulously, then adapt. On the Pacific row, the Brothers N Oars crew carried 55 days of food and a detailed routine of two-hour shifts, 24 hours a day. Within days the ocean had rewritten the plan. Leaders learn how to hold a plan firmly enough to commit to it and loosely enough to change it.
- Lead a small team in a confined space. Four people, one small boat, 39 days. Every frustration was magnified. Paris shows how trust, roles and honest communication kept the crew together, and how the same principles apply to a leadership team under pressure.
- Purpose over talent. The crew had never rowed an ocean, and had barely rowed at all. Only 82 of 122 crews had ever completed the crossing. What carried them was a shared purpose: raising more than £150,000 for marine conservation.
- Recovery is a leadership decision. Running seven marathons in under six days meant sleeping on planes and refuelling on the move. Leaders learn why protecting recovery, for themselves and their people, is part of performance, not a break from it.
Who has booked it
The leadership keynote has been delivered to some very different rooms. At the Kraft Heinz MEA Leadership Convention in Dubai in November 2025, under the banner "Let's Lead Now", Paris spoke to Middle East and Africa leaders facing significant organisational change. For Nokia in October 2025, he focused on planning meticulously but adapting, a principle that mapped directly onto change management. At Fort Shafter, Pearl Harbor, in 2025, he delivered a keynote on grit, resilience and leadership to the US Army, in Hawaii, where the Pacific row had ended two years earlier. At the Beyond Boundaries leadership event in June 2025, he shared the stage with two other speakers on redefining the limits of human potential.
A leader who runs a business
Paris is not only an adventurer. As CEO of Blazing Sand Studios, the production company he founded in 2019 and has built in the UAE, he deals with hiring, cash flow, client deadlines and constant technology change. His whole working life has been spent building ventures, so his examples land with leaders because he is facing the same pressures they are.

How it is tailored
Before the event, Paris holds a briefing call to understand your leadership theme, the change your organisation is going through and the message you want leaders to take home. He then shapes the stories and the method around it, so the keynote feels written for your room.
